The Hills stood tall and proud and the winds whistled - announcing
their presence.
Townspeople
huddled in their clothes, grabbing possessions - hurrying to their homes.
At the window I
watched the town and the hills - I heard the winds and the conversations of the
elderly…
They spoke of
Harmattan - cold haze that turned scalding, hot, bath waters, cold and left skin
and lip dry.
I continued my
watch – I saw the mysterious haze, tumble softly down the hills, in a cascade,
like a dream.
The haze
covered the entire town in minutes – The town shimmered in and out of focus
like a smoker’s art work
It was cold
like I had never known; my hometown at Christmas – but it was not snow.
Still I watched, hoping the haze would begin to take shape and become snow - I got colder but it did not snow.
‘Next year, maybe
next year it will snow’, I said to myself as I shivered and turned away from
the window - 25 years ago.
