Half of me you'll never be, so you should feel threatened by me. Lyrics Excerpt from Threatened by Michael Jackson |
Across all people, races and culture
The most commonly experienced fears are:
The fear of facing any kind of audience alone
And the fear of the standing in the dark alone
Something about being in the limelight
Increases our awareness of our flaws
And something about being alone and unnoticed
Forces us to remember our mortality
So people mock those who boldly face an audience
Because they remind them of all they may never be
And people avoid those who are obscure
Lest that obscurity rub off on them
We all have our assigned audiences
And obscurity looks different on everyone
Assuming someone is flawed because they are in the limelight
Will not make us feel less threatened nor diminish our own darkness
Because we will all stand before some kind of audience
And we will all stand alone in the dark and unnoticed
But we should not avoid the limelight because of flaws
And we should not dread the dark because we will die
Your beauty, creativity and glory
Exists for the world to see, enjoy and celebrate
But its purpose will be defeated
If you do not welcome the limelight
Your flaws, inadequacies and fears
Exist that they may die in the dark
But they will thrive and spread their tentacles
If you do not see obscurity of darkness as a way to kill them
